My father has said that the restoration work necessary on my car was extreme and that I'm just getting past the very difficult part in the reconstruction of the front clip but it has been alot of work. I have worked on my car several days this years and have barely finish putting the clip back together. This weekend I hope to be able to paint the frame rails and fender aprons. Thats it! I want to have the wheels on it by the end of January and thats a big goal. People who completely restore old cars show a sense of dedication(and possibly obsession) that I'm learning all about.
Method for everything in a car There is a method from taking off, repairing and putting back on just about every part of a car. The chemicals, sealants, tools and knowledge necessary to perform most tasks are new to me almost everytime I do something on my vehicle. My experience was limited to working on my Mustang and the time I worked for my father as a mechanics helper in my late teenage years. This is totally different and I imagine it wouldn't be so hard if I understood the many different methods for working on metals, joints, front ends, etc, etc. Takes time to do everything It takes a good amount of time and careful work to do just about EVERYTHING when you're working with metal and small parts on something as big as a 1969 Mustang Mach 1. Rusty metal has to be cleaned, shaped and re-attached. New metal replaces old metal and then it all has to be smoothed over and painted. Then you have to put all the small parts on and balance them so the thing can sit on its wheels again. This has only been the front end of the car for me! I can imagine what doing the front end, rear end, paint and interior are like. I definitely respect anyone who has finished an old car restoration. In doing so they demonstrate a level of knowledge, dedication and PATIENCE that few must possess. Hopefully I'll join them one day with my old car. |
