So I've gotten back into playing no limit tournament Texas Hold'em poker
tournaments around Baton Rouge again. Nothing big, $25-$50 buy in games that I'd
more/less consider a friendly game. After about 15 games I'm back in the swing
of the game and have managed to place in 4 of my last 5 tournaments where there
were 20 or more players. However I've noticed that all these players who display
all the motions and actions they've seen of players on television have picked up
a bad habit I've seen displayed by only one character in such fashion, they
Hellmuth people. These are the people who have developed egos about their
knowledge of the game and insist on sitting around like arm chair quarterbacks
criticizing everything other people do. Bad business Why do this to bad players? Really this is an incredibly bad decision to ridicule bad players for making mistakes and beating you. The idea of this game is to make the best decisions possible based on the information and if other people aren't doing this it works in your best interests. So for you to point out in such nasty fashion the point that a player is not good isn't in your best interests. In fact part of being a good player would be not encouraging other players to improve on their game. If they beat you sometimes thats just the breaks. Worst than I remember I quit player poker tournaments for the better park of a year in 2006. When I was still playing a year ago it wasn't near so bad. People took beats but that was it. There wasn't near so much screaming, throwing or blatantly asking people how the hell can you call that pre-flop. People just played and shook their head when someone got stupid and still got paid. Don't do this Seriously people, don't be Phil Hellmuth. Its part of his game to intimidate. He bitches about everything and in addition he plays in games with zeroes behind the $25-$50. You're not doing your game any favors in the little games to bitch at bad players. Let them be bad and learn to figure out what they've got. Most of the people I see do this have holes in their own game and really should look at their game to figure out not only how to make the right decisions based on cards, but also on the players. Avoid the grenades until you've got a big enough hammer or read on them and if you get beat oh well. - Jerry Odom November 29, 2006 |
