Serenity Movie
Here's how it is...
|
I went and saw the Serenity movie
tonight and was suprised at just how good it was. I expected me to like it
because I've been watching the television series that had a one season
running a few years back but I found the story to be quite good and
something I know other people could pickup, watch and enjoy. Serenity
delivers a well directed and on the level performance that should create
alot of new fans and at least a second movie.
Serenity is based off of a television series called
Firefly where people teraformed another solar system and created a new
system of 36+ planets after our home Earth was used up. There was a large
civil war and a nation is formed with outlying backwoods planets and inner
advanced civilized planets. Try thinking the USA when we had the wild west
after the revolution except that its space based so think space ships and
laser guns. You can see the theme as you watch it because the outer rim
people look and act western and the music is themed as such. It sounds like
it'd be corny at first but after about an hour you'll be thinking hey this
is pretty good.

Unlike alot of TV based shows Serenity gives just enough back story so that
you can understand what each character does and where they came from so that
you can get a good feel for whats going on without seeing the TV show. The
cast is so well put together that you understand that they belong together.
In many flicks it seems like a bunch of strangers who supposedly have known
each other but here isn't the case. The chemistry is just right for these
guys. Malcolm looks and feels like a leader, Jayne a strong arm, River a
looney, etc. They're individual parts of a puzzle bring them together as one
big picture that you can easily see whole. You can also visualize the
attraction between certain male/female paired characters because they look
like they'd be right together so you're not left guessing. For me casting
just right develops caring from me when I'm watching a movie.(if I don't
care I probably won't finish the movie) I was really bummed when Wash was
killed and feel like that was really a mistake if they mean to create a new
series after the movie run. The actor who played Shepherd played the
religious counsel part so well that even though he wasn't so developed in
the movie I felt for it when Shepherd was killed.

One interesting aspect of the culture that I enjoyed was the way they mixed
in Chinese culture and language. That makes sense sense the Asians represent
such a large aspect of our population and are scientifically and
economically coming close to surpassing us in the west. Its only natural
that eventually they'd make a big influnece over everyone else and have us
speaking their language. Alot of language is thrown in that I don't
understand but the effect was there.(Run into trouble and curse in Chinese.)
Serenity is the best out the gate Sci Fi movie to pop up since Vin Diesel
showed up in Pitch Black. Its action packed with a good story and pretty
good/moderately used special effects. Its not overdone and will leave you
happy with where you spent your movie dollars. In my opinion its a better
casted show than Stargate(which is presently the big thing with sci fi
buffs) and made a better movie as well. I'd be suprised if we didn't see a
new Serenity series run on the Sci Fi channel given general opinion from
other people I know and critics reviews. Bottom line is that this show
deserves at least 3 seasons on TV before passing a judgement I'm sure it'd
be favored in. I hope to see more of Malcolm Reynolds and his crew
swashbuckling around their solar system.

Serenity Firefly Sequel - (update May 2006)
I still haven't seen anything about a Firefly sequel filming. I'd heard a
rumor that they might make one that would go straight to TV for the Sci Fi
network but we'll see. I guess I'll just have to go buy the DVD set for
Serenity and watch it over and over again....*sigh*.
