I went and saw the Serenity movie
tonight and was suprised at just how good it was. I expected me to like it
because I've been watching the television series that had a one season
running a few years back but I found the story to be quite good and
something I know other people could pickup, watch and enjoy. Serenity
delivers a well directed and on the level performance that should create
alot of new fans and at least a second movie.
Serenity is based off of a television series called Firefly where people teraformed another solar system and created a new system of 36+ planets after our home Earth was used up. There was a large civil war and a nation is formed with outlying backwoods planets and inner advanced civilized planets. Try thinking the USA when we had the wild west after the revolution except that its space based so think space ships and laser guns. You can see the theme as you watch it because the outer rim people look and act western and the music is themed as such. It sounds like it'd be corny at first but after about an hour you'll be thinking hey this is pretty good. Unlike alot of TV based shows Serenity gives just enough back story so that you can understand what each character does and where they came from so that you can get a good feel for whats going on without seeing the TV show. The cast is so well put together that you understand that they belong together. In many flicks it seems like a bunch of strangers who supposedly have known each other but here isn't the case. The chemistry is just right for these guys. Malcolm looks and feels like a leader, Jayne a strong arm, River a looney, etc. They're individual parts of a puzzle bring them together as one big picture that you can easily see whole. You can also visualize the attraction between certain male/female paired characters because they look like they'd be right together so you're not left guessing. For me casting just right develops caring from me when I'm watching a movie.(if I don't care I probably won't finish the movie) I was really bummed when Wash was killed and feel like that was really a mistake if they mean to create a new series after the movie run. The actor who played Shepherd played the religious counsel part so well that even though he wasn't so developed in the movie I felt for it when Shepherd was killed. |
